2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION


2.1 Health Effects - Acute

Swallowed

May cause severe and permanent damage to the digestive tract. May cause severe gastrointestinal tract irritation with nausea, vomiting and possible burns. May cause perforation of the digestive tract. May be harmful if swallowed. May form methemoglobin which in sufficient concentration causes cyanosis. In high doses manganese may increase anemia by interfering with iron absorption.

Eye

Causes severe eye irritation and possible burns. May cause chemical conjunctivitis and corneal damage.

Skin

Causes skin irritation and possible burns. May cause skin rash (in milder cases) and cold and clammy skin with cyanosis or pale colour. Skin contact can cause brown stains in the area, and possible hardening of the outer skin layer.

Inhaled

Aspiration may lead to pulmonary oedema. Causes respiratory tract irritation with possible burns.

2.2 Health Effects - Chronic

Prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause defatting and dermatitis. Effects may be delayed. Laboratory experiments have resulted in mutagenic effects. Chronic manganese toxicity through inhalation may result in "manganism:, which is a disease of the central nervous system involving psychic and neurological disorders. May cause kidney damage. May cause reproductive effects.

2.3 First Aid

Swallowed

DO NOT induce vomiting. If victim is conscious and alert, give 2 - 4 cupfuls of milk or water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Seek medical attention immediately.

Eye

Get medical aid immediately. DO NOT allow victim to rub or keep eyes closed. Extensive irrigation is required (at least 30 minutes).

Skin

Get medical aid immediately. Immediately flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash clothing before reuse. Destroy contaminated shoes.

Inhaled

Get medical aid immediately. Remove from exposure to fresh air immediately. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. DO NOT use mouth-to-mouth respiration. If breathing has ceased apply artificial respiration using oxygen and a suitable mechanical device such as a bag and a mask.

First Aid Facilities

Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.

2.5 Advice to Doctor

Absoprtion of this product into the body may cause cyanosis. Moderate degrees of cyanosis need to be treated only by supportive mesaures; bed rest and oxygen inhalation. If cyanosis is severe, intravenous injection of Methylene blue, 1 mg/kg of body weight may be of value.

3.3 Personal Protection

Eye protection - Wear appropriate protective eyeglasses or chemical safety goggles. Skin protection - Wear appropriate protective gloves to prevent skin exposure. Wear appropriate protective clothing to prevent skin exposure. Respiratory protection - A respiratory protection that meets standards, must be followed whenever workplace conditions warrant a respirator's use.

4.1 Storage / Transport

Keep away form sources of ignition. Do not store near combustible materials. Store in a tightly closed container. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances such as strong reducing agents, peroxides , aluminium, zinc, lead, copper, copper alloys, organic materials, suphuric acid, glycerol, phosphorus, combustible organics, ammonium nitrate, dimethyl formamide, ethylene glycol, hydroxylamine, hydrogen trisulphide, antimony, amonnium salts, acids, sulphur, acetic acid, acetic anhydride, arsenites, bromides, iodides, hydrochloric acid, charcoal, ferric salts, mercurous salts, hypophosphites, sulphites, alcohols and rubber. Avoid high temperatures and dust generation. Wash thoroughly after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. Minimise dust generation and accumulation. Do not get in eyes, on skin or on clothing. Do not ingest or inhale. Discard contaminated shoes.

4.3 Spills and Disposal

Spills

Clean-up personnel should wear full protective clothing including breathing apparatus in dusty conditions. Do not allow product to enter water courses. Avoid generating dusty conditions.

Vacuum or sweep up material and place into a suitable container for disposal. Do not use combustible materials such as paper towels to clean up spill. Avoid runoff into storm sewers and ditches which lead to waterways. DO NOT get water inside containers.

Disposal

Chemical waste generators must determine whether a discarded chemical is classified as hazardous waste.

4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD

Fire / Explosion

Strong oxidiser. Contact with other materials may cause a fire. Material is stable under normal temperatures and pressures. Avoid high temperatures and reducing agents. Explodes on contact with some acids such as acetic acid, concentrated hydrochloric acid, and formaldehyde, ammonium nitrate, dimethyl- formamide. Forms sensitive explosive mixtures with ammonium perchlorate, titanium, arsenic, phosphorous, slag wool, and sulphur. Reacts with reducing agents. Hazardous decomposition products include irritating and toxic fumes and gases, oxygen, oxide of potassium. Some oxidisers may react explosively with hydrocarbons (fuel). May accelerate burning if involved in a fire. Containers may explode when heated.

Extinguishing Media

Fire fighters should wear full protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus. For small fires DO NOT use dry chemicals, carbon dioxide, h halon or foam. USE WATER ONLY. For large fires, flood fire area with water from a distance. Cool containers with flooding quantities of water until well after fire is out.
